Located in Grenville, St. Andrew, St. Andrew’s School for Special Education (SASSE) has provided vital educational support for over 40 years, serving as a cornerstone for special needs education in the north-east of Grenada.

Our Past Achievements

Since our founding in 2004, The Sunshine Foundation has been driven by a simple belief: direct support creates lasting change. Working at the grassroots level, we connect generous hearts in the UK directly to St. Andrew’s School for Special Education (SASSE) in Grenada, while remaining deeply rooted in supporting our local West London community.

Recognition & Community Awards

• Grenada High Commission Community Award: Honoured at the Grenada 43rd Independence Anniversary Gala at the Grosvenor Hotel, receiving an official Certificate of Recognition from the Grenada High Commission in London for outstanding service and dedication to the diaspora and Grenadian communities.

• Sainsbury’s Charity Partnership Award: Received formal recognition and a certificate of excellence after being selected as Sainsbury’s local Charity of the Year, celebrating our joint community fundraising initiatives and sports equipment donations.

Direct Support at SASSE (Grenada)

• Infrastructure & Facility Upgrades: Funded vital repairs to SASSE’s facilities, including renovating essential hygiene spaces and repainting both the outdoor playground and main building exteriors.

• Classroom Technology & Learning Tools: Equipped classrooms with widescreen televisions, audio equipment, specialized mathematics sets, and photocopiers to help teachers produce accessible daily learning materials.

• Independence & Vocational Training: Provided long-term financial backing for the school’s practical cookery programme, teaching pupils essential life skills and self-reliance.

• Mobility Assistance: Purchased a custom mobility stroller for a SASSE graduate, enabling her to live independently and build her own local jewellery business.

Pupil Sponsorship & Sunshine Packages

• Hardship Tuition & Meal Grants: Funded full annual tuition and daily lunches for up to 10 pupils at a time, whose families faced financial hardship, securing their education until state funding took over.

• ‘Sunshine in a Box’ Appeal: Shipped annual Christmas packages packed with individual gifts, sensory toys, and holiday treats directly to SASSE pupils and staff.

• Resource Shipments: Packed and shipped multiple crates and barrels of reading books, art materials, sports gear (in partnership with Sainsbury’s), clothing, and sensory aids straight to the school gates.

Local Action & UK Community Impact

• Special Needs Education & Training: Partnered with Springhallow School in Ealing to advocate for local special educational needs and hosted community Makaton sign-language training sessions.

• Empowerment Projects with Ealing MENCAP: Donated directly to Ealing MENCAP to support initiative projects that build confidence, advocacy, and social skills for local young people with learning disabilities.

• Cultural Connection & Community Events: Organized vibrant West London gatherings—from Black History Month quizzes and Showcase events to Carnival Band launches with local choirs—bringing the diaspora together while raising vital awareness.

• Carnival & Dance Heritage Collaboration: Partnered with local dance and carnival heritage initiatives to deliver educational seminars on the history of carnival dance and costume, alongside joint community gala events.

• Emergency & Medical Support: Contributed to the Grenada Covid-19 Relief Fund to supply urgent medical PPE on the island, sent aid to the Dorothy Hopkins Home, and provided medical funding for an autistic child undergoing cancer treatment.
